Identifying the neutrino mass spectrum from a supernova neutrino burst
We study the role that the future detection of the neutrino burst from a galactic supernova can play in the reconstruction of the neutrino mass spectrum. We consider all possible 3ν mass and flavor spectra which describe the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. For each of these spectra we find the observable effects of the supernova neutrino conversions both in the matter of the star and the e...
متن کاملShock propagation and neutrino oscillation in supernova
The effect of the shock propagation on neutrino oscillation in supernova is studied paying attention to evolution of average energy of νe and ν̄e. We show that the effect appears as a decrease in average νe (in case of inverted mass hierarchy, ν̄e) energy at stellar surface as the shock propagates. It is found that the effect is significant 2 seconds after bounce if 3× 10 < sin θ13 < 10 .
متن کاملSupernova neutrino observations: What can we learn?
Twenty years after SN 1987A, the vast international programme of experimental neutrino physics and neutrino astronomy suggests that large detectors will operate for a long time. It is realistic that a high-statistics neutrino signal from a galactic SN will be observed. I review some of the generic lessons from such an observation where neutrinos largely play the role of astrophysical messengers...
متن کاملSupernova constraints on neutrino mass and mixing
In this article I review the constraints on neutrino mass and mixing coming from type-II supernovae. The bounds obtained on these parameters from shock reheating, r-process nucleosynthesis and from SN1987A are discussed. Given the current constraints on neutrino mass and mixing the effect of oscillations of neutrinos from a nearby supernova explosion in future detectors will also be discussed.
متن کاملDetecting the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy with a Supernova at IceCube
IceCube, a future km antarctic ice Cherenkov neutrino telescope, is highly sensitive to a galactic supernova (SN) neutrino burst. The Cherenkov light corresponding to the total energy deposited by the SN neutrinos in the ice can be measured relative to background fluctuations with a statistical precision much better than 1%. If the SN is viewed through the Earth, the matter effect on neutrino o...
